Arlington Baptist University Names Larry Tidwell as Athletic Director

Larry Tidwell brings one of the most accomplished resumes in collegiate athletics to Arlington Baptist University. He completed his 50th year of coaching and teaching in May 2026. His extensive experience in coaching, teaching, fundraising, athletic administration, and leadership at the high school, NAIA, and NCAA Division I levels provides him with the knowledge and expertise to help lead the ABU Patriot athletic programs. 

A seven-time Hall of Fame honoree and nationally respected leader in intercollegiate athletics, Tidwell has built a legacy defined by competitive excellence, student-athlete development, and a commitment to Christian values. Through his “Service Above Self” dedication to community service, more than 30,000 hours have been credited to his collegiate teams. 

Throughout his distinguished career, Tidwell has served in leadership roles at some of the nation’s most respected institutions, including Baylor University, Texas Christian University, The University of Kansas, Lamar University, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Texas Tech University, University of Louisiana Monroe, Tarleton State University, and Dallas Christian College. During these tenures, he has served as Athletic Director, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Associate Head Coach, Chief of Staff, and Assistant Coach. This diverse experience has given him a unique understanding of every aspect of athletic administration, program development, and student-athlete development. As a collegiate head coach, Tidwell has maintained a student-athlete graduation rate exceeding 90%. 

With an emphasis on women’s basketball at the collegiate level, Tidwell appeared in seven NCAA-accredited postseason tournaments during his 11-year head coaching tenure, including the NCAA Tournament, WNIT, and WBI. He compiled an overall NCAA Division I record of 213-141, followed by a two-year NCCAA record of 39-21 at Dallas Christian College, including two Final Four appearances at the ACCA Tournament. His collegiate coaching record stands at 252-161, while his high school girls’ basketball coaching record is 386-97, giving him a combined girls basketball head coaching record of 638-258. 

Adding a high school volleyball record of 263-59, a collegiate baseball mark of 37-12, and nine state rankings in girls' high school cross country and track, Tidwell has put together a blessed career record of 938-330.

Beyond wins and championships, Tidwell has dedicated his career to mentoring student athletes and young coaches. He has organized hundreds of basketball camps and clinics, traveled internationally to more than 40 countries promoting the game, and invested thousands of hours in community service and leadership development. His impact extends far beyond the court, as countless former players and coaches have gone on to successful careers in athletics, education, ministry, and business. To date, more than 240 former high school and collegiate players have entered the teaching and coaching professions, with many more expected to follow. 

A native Texan and graduate of Austin College, Tidwell has been inducted into seven Hall of Fames, including:

• 2022 Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame
• 2021 Lamar University Hall of Fame
• 2014 Austin College Joe Spencer Career Achievement Award
• 2010 Austin College Kedric Couch Coaching Award

• 2003 Sanger High School Hall of Fame

Arlington Baptist University Names Jason Venable Head Women’s Soccer Coach

Arlington, TX — Arlington Baptist University (ABU) is proud to announce the hiring of Jason Venable as the new Head Women’s Soccer Coach. Venable brings a distinguished legacy of leadership, player development, and competitive success to the soccer community, with more than three decades of coaching experience across Texas high school athletics. Known for his passion for the game and his commitment to building young men and women both on and off the field, Venable has earned statewide respect as a transformational coach and program builder.

Venable’s career is most notably defined by his remarkable tenure at Waxahachie High School, where he spent 23 years shaping one of the premier soccer programs in Texas. During that time, he served 22 seasons as Head Girls Soccer Coach and 12 seasons as Head Boys Soccer Coach, compiling an outstanding career record of 548-268-99. His teams qualified for the playoffs 23 times, captured six district championships, and competed in 62 postseason matches, including multiple regional semifinal appearances.

Under his leadership, Waxahachie consistently developed high-level talent, producing 33 All-Region players, 12 All-State selections, and more than 50 student-athletes who advanced to play collegiate soccer. His programs were known not only for their competitive excellence but also for their discipline, unity, and strong culture—often advancing both boys' and girls' teams to the playoffs in the same season.

A respected leader beyond his own program, Venable was inducted into the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Hall of Honor in 2018 and has served in leadership roles within statewide coaching organizations, including as a regional director and clinic speaker. He also founded the Waxahachie Junior High Soccer Program and played a key role in developing soccer programs across North Texas.

Throughout his career, Venable has remained deeply committed to mentorship. He invests in the lives of his players, emphasizing character, accountability, and personal growth. His influence extends far beyond the pitch, with former players going on to succeed in collegiate athletics, careers, and leadership roles in their communities.

Venable’s coaching philosophy centers on preparation, perseverance, and purpose—principles that have defined his career and continue to shape every program he leads.

Arlington Baptist University Names Derek Vierling Head Men’s Soccer Coach

Coach Vierling joins ABU following an accomplished tenure at Aledo High School, where he built one of the most respected soccer programs in the region. Over his 25 years in Aledo, Vierling developed a culture of excellence, consistently leading his teams to playoff appearances and earning recognition for both competitive success and player development.

During his time at Aledo, Coach Vierling:

  • Led his teams to multiple district championships and postseason runs

  • Built a program known for discipline, character, and consistency

  • Mentored numerous student-athletes who advanced to play at the collegiate level

  • Earned respect across the state for his leadership, longevity, and impact on the game
